Platform Gallery is pleased to present JOY & PAIN, on view at 116 W Mulberry Street. JOY & PAIN is a solo exhibition of works by HEIN KOH, an artist currently living and working in Brooklyn, NY. JOY & PAIN is a new body of work by Koh that is complete with programming throughout span of the exhibition.

JOY & PAIN is a multidisciplinary body of work by Hein Koh which includes drawings and sculpture. Koh’s sculptures and drawings investigate the everyday relationship between mind and body while prioritizing inclusivity with audience. Koh uses the nuances of her life as an artist, partner, and mother of twins to inform her practice. Relatable materials like spandex and glitter, establish inclusivity with the audience through humor and beauty, while iconography and scale are segways to larger overarching themes. Bright and shiny sculptures made from synthetic materials contrast and highlight Koh’s unreserved honesty in displaying the mind’s relationship to the body.

Join us Sunday June 11th from 2-4pm for an artist talk by Hein Koh on her solo exhibition, JOY & PAIN. This discussion will be moderated by Marcus Civin.

“Working with both fabric and hydrocal, my colorful and kooky sculptures range from soft, anthropomorphic, surrealist forms that clearly reference the body, to hard, gloppy and glittery pop representations of everyday objects and icons. I’m interested in exploring the body on a psychological, metaphorical and spiritual level, as well as creating a lexicon of meaning and reflection, based on memory, personal experiences, and symbology. Bright colors, the softness of stuffed fabric, and everyday imagery denote accessibility and familiarity, referencing domestic items such as toys, furniture and clothing. However, these belie an undercurrent of dark humor as well as perversion, resulting in a unique tension. Thus, my practice serves as a deep investigation of the psyche and collective consciousness, revealing itself to be uncanny as well as psychologically complex.”
